Frequently asked questions
1. Do you have to be a BA resident to sign up and participate?
a. No. We have players from many surrounding areas in our programs.
2. How do I become a coach?
a. E-mail us at BAVC@cox.net net, and we will walk you through the process. Background checks through our program are required.
3. Can players request a certain coach or team?
a. Yes. During registration there is a "special request" field. In this field, you can request a certain coach or team. We try our best to honor these requests, however if a team is full of returning players, or is already at maximum team size this is not always possible.
4. Can I request a certain practice night?
a. Yes. We try our best to honor these requests, however sometimes we are limited based on what teams have openings for additional players and what nights those teams practice on.
5. Are boys allowed?
a. YES! We encourage boys to come out and play. If we have enough boys of the same age group, we will create a boys' team. Otherwise, all teams are co-ed and boys will be placed where there are openings on teams.
6. What does each player need to bring?
a. Athletic non-skid shoes, knee pads are required, comfortable shorts and shirts for practice. Uniform t-shirts are provided for games, and usually provided by the 2 nd week of the league.

ATTITUDE
It is our goal to provide a positive and safe experience for our players while they are learning the fundamentals of volleyball. We ask that all adults maintain a positive attitude while providing encouragement and motivation to the players.
ATTIRE
1. All players must wear BAVC team shirt during every game. If shirts are lost, forgotten, ect.. replacement shirts are allowed but should be as close to the team color as possible.
2. Appropriate non-marking shoes must be worn. No flip flops, sandals, etc.
3. Knee pads must be worn at all times during games and practices.
GAMEPLAY: OBSTRUCTIONS
1. Any ball touching a court obstruction on the opponents' side is considered out of bounds.
2. Obstructions can include: Basketball hoops, Poles of the net, Antennae, Ceiling.
3. If the ball touches the ceiling and comes back down on the same side, play continues. If the ball touches the ceiling while going over the net, the ball is considered "out" and play stops with the receiving team getting the point.
GAMEPLAY: SUBSTITUTIONS
1. Substitutions must be made on every rotation. Players out the longest must be substituted in first (keep in order). The intent is for all players to get equal playing time.
2. Coaches need to signal the official for substitutions.
3. The official must acknowledge substitutions before the player enters the game.
4. Players must substitute in and out from above the attack line.
5. Substitutions can only be performed at the time of rotation.
6. All substitutions must be done from the middle back position.
GAMEPLAY: GENERAL RULES
1. Games should start at scheduled times. The official can allow 5 minutes grace time if needed.
2. After 5 minutes of grace time has expired, the team unable to play forfeits the first set, and forfeits the second set after an additional 5 minutes and forfeits the last set after an additional 5 minutes.
3. At game time team captain(s) go to the official. The official determines a method (odd/even number, coin toss, etc...) and determines which team wins. Winning team gets choice of serve or side. Serving team gets court first in warm-ups.
4. Warm-ups: Each team gets 2 minutes on the court and 2 minutes off the court, followed by 2 minutes of everyone serving back and forth.
5. Each game consists of 21 pts. Must win by 2, max to 28. First team to 28 wins.
6. Each match will consist of 3 sets (games).
7. Each team is allowed two 30-second timeouts per set.
8. Rally scoring will be used for all games.
9. All players present at the game are required to play in each game.
10. Players should stand along the sideline in team rotation order, when not playing.
11. Rotation occurs after a side out and only the serving team rotates. This includes the first side out after the first serve of the game.
12. Players who finish set #1 on the court will start set #2 in the same position they left at the end of set #1. Same applies to set #3 from set #2. Does not apply to Plus divisions.
13. There will be up to a maximum of 2 minutes between sets.
14. Each match is allotted 1 hour of play. At the start of the 3rd set, if there is less than 15 minutes left then the game will be played to only 15 points, win by 2 max 21.
15. Players going under the net - Touching the opponent’s court with any part(s) of the body is permitted, provided some part of the body remains either in contact with or directly above the center line, and there is no interference with opponents and does not present a safety hazard.
16. Contact with the net by a player between the antennae, during the action of playing the ball, is a fault.
GAMEPLAY: SERVING GENERAL RULES
1. An automatic side-out occurs after a team has scored 5 straight points while serving (at no additional point change).
2. If obstructions (such as bleachers or spectators) prevent the player from performing their normal serve routine without crossing the back line(s), they will be allowed to serve in their normal manner and cross the back line as needed with no faults being called by the referee.
4. Players have 8 seconds to serve the ball after the ref blows the whistle. Once the serving action is initiated, including an underhand serve, if the server tosses the ball and then catches it or allows it to fall to the floor, this is considered a service tossing error, including a ball that touches the server as it falls. After a service tossing error, the referee must authorize the service again (re-serve) and the server must execute it within the next 8 seconds. One service tossing error is permitted for each service. If a second service error is committed it is considered a fault and the opposing teams receives a point and the serve.
NOTE: These rules are specific to BAVC gameplay only. Many rules are changed from the more competitive formats to reflect a more recreational style of play. These rules have been adopted to help further our goal of providing a fun safe environment for all players to learn to enjoy and play the game of volleyball. Any USAV rules not specifically called here will be enforced at the discretion of the up-ref and/or BAVC board members and will be considered for addition to the rules as needed.

Rec Plus Divisions
Plus follows all the same recreational rules except for the following:
- All players must play at least 3 rotations. They do not have to rotate all the way around. If a player goes in for only 3 rotations, they either play front row for 3 rotations or back row for 3 rotations.
- Serving lines are the 2-3 in Division 2 and 3. Division 4 and 5 must serve from the back line. The max 5 serves rule still applies.
- Not everyone has to serve. Some players may not serve, as long as they are in for their 3 rotations.
- Players must sub in for only one player. They cannot sub in for multiple players. Example: if Amy goes in for Sarah, then Amy cannot go in for another player that set. This goes for Sarah. Sarah can only go in for Amy. This applies only per set. Each set players can change sub assignments.
Make sure you get everyone in the game each set if possible. We don't what players only playing one or two sets. Everyone to play every set when possible!
